Bird Walk with New Hope Audubon Society

Join the New Hope Audubon Society for a Bird Walk on Saturday, April 27th from 7:30AM to 10:30AM at Sandy Creek Park.

No reservations or sign-ups are needed. We do recommend carpooling for families or friend pods; while we love pets, there is a ‘no-pet’ policy for bird outings. New birders and birders of all skill levels are welcome. Please wear long pants, socks, and sturdy shoes (ticks and chiggers may be present). Sun and bug protection are also recommended. Bring snacks and water if you like. Heavy rain will result in cancellation.

Join Keep Durham Beautiful and the Bragtown Community Association for a Plant Swap at Red Maple Park on Saturday, May 6th from 12pm to 2pm.

House plants, flowers, herbs, vegetables and native plants are all welcome. No invasive plants please - check the Invasive Species Plant List if you aren't sure.

This is a great opportunity to divide up the pollinator-friendly perennials in your garden and share them with others, increasing the amount of pollinator-friendly habitat in Durham!

*Please note that bringing plants is NOT required to participate! There will be plenty to go around!

Intro to Citizen Science Hike

Join the Durham County Open Space Program at the New Hope Creek Bottomlands Trail for an introduction to citizen science! During this two hour, two-mile hike, we’ll discuss the role of citizen science in local conservation efforts, practice using popular citizen science apps like iNaturalist, and participate in the 2023 Durham BioBlitz.

We recommend downloading the free app iNaturalist on your smartphone prior to this event. It may also be helpful to download eBird and Merlin Bird ID, both of which are also free. Finally, come prepared to get muddy! We’ll be hiking in a floodplain.

Join the Ellerbe Creek Bioblitz from September 30th-October 9th!

Please join us for a volunteer opportunity to explore and catalog Durham's beautiful nature. No experience necessary! Document what you find through the iNaturalist app and share your observations and you will be part of our citizen science project.

Within the Ellerbe Creek Watershed, Simply take a photo of plant or animal life during the week of September 30th through October 9th and upload it to the iNaturalist app - it's that easy!

iNaturalist training sessions will be offered, and you can participate on your own or in small organized groups anywhere in Durham. In addition we will be hosting organized walks in ECWA preserves and Durham parks within Ellerbe Creek Watershed!

Explore your own backyard, neighborhood, local park or join a guided event.

Bird Outing at Sandy Creek Park

Join New Hope Audubon Society at Sandy Creek Park for a Durham BioBlitz event/bird outing. The eBird checklist from this outing will be shared with Durham BioBlitz and generate useful data for science and conservation.

For bird observations we encourage you to use eBird because it doesn’t require you to submit a photograph or sound recording. Please share your ebird sightings with the Durham Bioblitz account within eBird (username: durhambioblitz).

We will do a 2-3 hour hike at the park and explore spring birds as migration peaks. New birders and birders of all skill levels are welcome.

Join Durham Parks and Recreation and the Eno River Association as we hike through the meadow at West Point on the Eno Environmental Education Pavilion OR along the Eno River to see what plants and wildlife we can find!

We will document biodiversity along the way using the iNaturalist app in order to participate in this year’s Durham Bioblitz, which is a great way to connect with your environment while generating useful data for science and conservation while having fun.

Wear weather-appropriate clothing and closed-toed shoes. Youth under 16 must be accompanied by a registered adult. Preregistration is required for all participants.

Join the City Nature Challenge!

Join the City Nature Challenge!

The City Nature Challenge is a worldwide event aimed at discovering and documenting the nature all around you. Participants photograph wild, living things they see, April 29–May 2, and upload them to iNaturalist (free app or website) to help support the effort in their local area. This event is running concurrent with the Durham BioBlitz, so any observations made during the event time period will count for both!

Sign up for this virtual event to learn how to participate in the City Nature Challenge in North Carolina, including how to make iNaturalist observations, how to take a great photo for science, and where to look for species anywhere, in this virtual program with the NC Museum of Natural Sciences’ Head of Citizen Science, Chris Goforth!

This will be great practice for those wanting to participate in the Durham BioBlitz as well.

Join Keep Durham Beautiful to help clean up litter in Goose Creek running through Long Meadow Park. Urban waterways need our help - plus we will discover the wildlife living in one of Durham's local parks!
