Geer Cemetery Cleanup Workday for Big Sweep - RESCHEDULED to Oct 16

  • 800 Colonial Street Durham, NC, 27701 United States (map)

Members of the community are invited to join Friends of Geer Cemetery and Keep Durham Beautiful volunteers in celebration of Big Sweep 2021 by picking up limbs, cutting vines, and removing litter in this historic cemetery.

This cemetery holds a rich history as the only African American cemetery for Durham from 1876 to 1942 and is the final resting place for more than 1,500 people. You can learn more about its history at Friends of Geer Cemetery and Durham In Plain Sight.

Friends of Geer Cemetery works to reclaim, restore, and respect one of Durham’s first burial grounds for the African American public. We reject the erasure of African American history and culture by honoring the lives and legacies of those laid to rest in this sacred place through preservation, storytelling, education, and community-building.

Keep Durham Beautiful will provide all tools and safety equipment. All ages are welcome, those under 18 should be accompanied by an adult.
