Cigarette Litter Pick Up at Durham Station

  • Durham Station 515 West Pettigrew Street Durham, NC, 27701 United States (map)

Did you know that cigarette butts are the #1 most littered item in the country? This is partly due to the misconception that cigarette filters are made of cotton or another biodegradable substance, when in fact they are actually made of a plastic foam known as cellulose acetate which does not break down in the environment. Cigarette butts are also one of the worst forms of pollution because of the toxic chemicals they contain, which then wash into our rivers, creeks, and streams and eventually the ocean!

We're teaming up with Duke University's Center for Addiction Science and Technology to perform a litter pickup at one of Durham's spots with the highest concentration of cigarette butt litter: Durham Station!

Join us from 1pm to 3pm as we beautify Durham Station and raise awareness of this pernicious form of litter and what you can do to stop it.
