Take a Child Outside Week

  • Durham, NC United States (map)

Take A Child Outside Week was founded to help connect children with nature. By celebrating opportunities for children to have free play outside, highlighting locations offering places to explore the outdoors, and providing simple activities anyone can do, we hope to increase the number of children experiencing the natural world. This year, TACO Week takes place from September 24th to 30th.

Get to know the outdoors spaces in Durham by:

  • Exploring the river at West Point on the Eno.

  • Engaging with local waterways at Ellerbe Creek Preserves.

  • Learning about plant life at Sarah P. Duke Gardens.

  • Playing sports or enjoying the play structures at DPR City Parks.

  • Walking along the American Tobacco Trail.

  • Or exploring other outdoor spaces near you!

Other ideas to get kids outside:

-Plan a Litter Cleanup!

When you get outside, take some time to look for litter in the area around you. Litter that isn't picked up can end up in waterways, moving through rivers and lakes where we get our drinking water, and eventually reaching the ocean.

You can utilize our Tool Lending Library to organize a family litter cleanup at any time, not just during TACO Week!

-Join the Ellerbe Creek BioBlitz!
