Geer Cemetery Workday

  • Geer Cemetery 800 Colonial Street Durham, NC, 27701 United States (map)

Members of the community are invited to join the Friends of Geer Cemetery in picking up limbs, cutting vines, and removing litter in historic Geer Cemetery on Saturday, July 16th from 11am to 1pm.

This cemetery holds a rich history as one of the few African American cemeteries for Durham from 1876 to 1942 and is the final resting place for more than 1,500 people. You can learn more about its history at Friends of Geer Cemetery and Durham In Plain Sight.

Friends of Geer Cemetery works to reclaim, restore, and respect one of Durham’s first burial grounds for the African American public. We reject the erasure of African American history and culture by honoring the lives and legacies of those laid to rest in this sacred place through preservation, storytelling, education, and community-building.

Keep Durham Beautiful will provide all tools and safety equipment. All ages are welcome, those under 18 should be accompanied by an adult.
