Adopt-a-street

Take responsibility for an area of your community! Adopt a Durham 1-mile stretch of city-maintained streets and commit to keeping it litter free by organizing monthly cleanups.

BIG Sweep

Durham’s Largest litter cleanup of the year! In October, groups from across Durham volunteer to pick up litter from their local neighborhoods, parks, and streams.

Creek Week

Creek Week is a time to discover and clean up our local streams. Celebrated in Durham since 2009, we have collected 190,637 pounds of litter with 4,117 volunteers to date.

Litter index

The Community Appearance and Litter Index is a quantitative measure used across the nation to gauge roadside litter levels. Keep Durham Beautiful, has been monitoring litter in Durham since 2005.

Litter Kits in Schools

Litter Kits in Schools fosters environmental responsibility and stewardship in Durham students by providing schools with litter cleanup kits and an accompanying litter and waste reduction curriculum.

Swat-a-Litterbug

The N.C Department of Transportation’s Swat-A-Litterbug Program encourages the public to report people who litter in an effort to help make North Carolina roadways cleaner.

Litter Leaders

Litter Leaders are volunteers trained in litter cleanup safety, cleanup operating procedures, and the basics of volunteer leadership. Once you have received training, we will provide the resources necessary to be a litter prevention advocate and lead KDB litter removal events.
