Durham Big Sweep

Participate in the largest Litter cleanup event of the year

Every September and October, groups from across Durham volunteer to pick up litter in their local neighborhoods, parks, and streams. This is one of the longest running events hosted by Keep Durham Beautiful. Over 5100 volunteers have picked up over 160,000 pounds of litter since Big Sweep's inception in 2005. In 2017, volunteers collected an astounding 30,000 pounds of trash, breaking the previous record, set in 2012, by over 10,000 pounds. This event provides countless benefits to the communities involved and is one of the most impactful means of keeping Durham beautiful
