KaBOOM! Playground for Oakwood Park
DESIGNED BY KIDS, BUILT BY VOLUNTEERS:
CITY OF DURHAM, KEEP DURHAM BEAUTIFUL, ABC11, DISNEY AND KaBOOM! BUILD NEW PLAYGROUND FOR CHILDREN IN ONE DAY
DURHAM – Before the sun set this past Saturday, children in Durham had a great new place to play. The new playground was fully assembled in less than eight hours at Oakwood Avenue Park with the help of more than 200 City of Durham and Keep Durham Beautiful volunteers, ABC11, Disney VoluntEARS , KaBOOM! organizers, and local community residents.
Today’s playground will provide hundreds of children in Durham with a safe place to play. Planning for the playground began at a Design Day event held in September. Local children and community leaders met with organizers from Disney and KaBOOM! to design their dream playground. The children’s drawings were then used to create the final playground design.
“A new playground at Oakwood Park will be very much appreciated and well used by the neighborhood and surrounding areas,” said Rhonda B. Parker, Director of Durham Parks and Recreation. “We at Durham Parks and Recreation are excited to be involved in this partnership, and are thrilled that so many people will work together to create a new playground that children will enjoy for years to come.”
“It’s fantastic that the Durham community, with such a volunteer spirit, willingly gave their time on a Saturday to build a safe and nurturing play space,” said Tania Dautlick, Executive Director of Keep Durham Beautiful. “This is the perfect example of a successful project for Keep Durham Beautiful. It engages individuals and community partners to come together to create a better environment.”
Since 1996, KaBOOM! has used its innovative community-build model to bring together community interests and business to construct more than 2,300 new places to play across North America.
“Every child deserves to have a great place to play and we’re thrilled to continue our work with Disney in striving toward that goal,” said Darell Hammond, KaBOOM! founder & CEO. “Thanks to the efforts from Disney, ABC 11 KaBOOM!, the City of Durham and Keep Durham Beautiful, we moved one step closer to the KaBOOM! vision of a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America.”
The new playground is one of dozens made possible with support from Disney to inspire kids to lead healthier lifestyles. By the end of 2013, Disney’s support will bring the magic of play to over 50,000 kids and families.
“Only 1-in-5 children live within walking distance of a park or playground,” said Leslie Goodman, senior vice president, Corporate Citizenship, The Walt Disney Company. “Disney and ABC11 are proud to join KaBOOM!, the City of Durham and Keep Durham Beautiful to build a new playground for the community. Together, we hope to make places to play more accessible, and inspire kids and families to stay active.”
