Summer Communications Internship 2017

Keep Durham Beautiful is currently accepting applications for our Summer Communications Internship. Help the environment and promote important issues like litter prevention, waste reduction, and community greening, all while building digital communication skills, media experience, and a portfolio of published work.

KDB is uniquely positioned as a nonprofit organization that partners closely with many local nonprofits, community groups, businesses, the City of Durham, and Durham County. Our communications intern will gain experience with both the nonprofit and municipal environments and networks.

This is a 12-week unpaid opportunity for 15-20 hours per week, and there is considerable flexibility to shape the position around your passions and make it your own. The ideal candidate is a self-starter with strong written and oral communication skills, experience with social media, and demonstrated interest in the environment.

The candidate must have access to a computer with a reliable internet connection. While KDB is based in Durham, N.C., we will consider the option of the intern working remotely.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Grow and manage Keep Durham Beautiful’s social media presence across platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram;
  • Develop engaging and consistent content for website and social media outlets with the intention to grow followers by 10%;
  • Produce print and online marketing materials for volunteer and fundraising events;
  • Prepare a social media report for the Board of Directors;
  • Create a strategic communication plan focused on volunteer and donor recruitment and retention;
  • Report to supervisor weekly.

Requirements:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated;
  • Experience with social media platforms, such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook;
  • Experience using a WordPress website or similar platform preferred;
  • Demonstrated interest in environmental issues including litter prevention, recycling and waste reduction, pollinator conservation, and community greening a plus;
  • Preferred candidate has experience with the people, communities, and culture of Durham.
